Data Conversion
Is your organization switching from one database system to another? Data conversion is one of the most important steps to plan as you change your system. Design the steps for data conversion carefully to maximize the chances for success of the new system.
Here are some things to consider:
- Does your existing data map directly to your new system? If not, then it is very important to plan how your information will be transferred. In order to make the data conversion a success, the mapping of the data will need to ensure that related information retains their links when placed in the new system. Breaking the data apart in order to put it into a new system requires extra work to maintain the validity of the information.
- Do you have information that is mixed together in your current system? Extracting multiple data elements from one field can be troublesome since the data is usually not stored in a consistent manner. Automating this process will get much of the data conversion completed, but subtle differences can often slow the entire process.
- Does your new system require data that your current system doesn't have? Often times when upgrading an information management system, the new system offers many additional features and functionality. However, in order to facilitate these new features, the system must have the data that makes the features work properly. If your current system doesn't have this information, then the benefit of the new system is lost. During the data conversion process, rules can be established to derive the new information and apply it to the new system.
